Director’s Corner

Dear VASA Students, Parents & Guardians,

Warm greetings go out to you all from all of us here at VASA.

We would like to update you on the great things happening here at VASA.

We are having our school performance of Peach Blossom on Wednesday.  Students from each classroom will be performing and judged on voice quality, posture, eye contact, gestures, over all participation, preparation, meaning and emotion.

We are looking forward to Parker, the Fresno Grizzlies Bear, visit in early March!  He will be kicking off our Wild About Reading program.  This program is designed to reinforce the importance and excitement of reading.  Students will be challenged to read 10 books in 5 weeks.  If they meet this challenge they will receive 2 free Fresno Grizzlies tickets.

We will be out of school on Feb. 8, 15, & 16.  The 16th is a staff in-service day and we will be having trainings and lots of collaboration.

As always, we appreciate your ongoing support! If you would like to volunteer your time or services in anyway, please let us know, so we can schedule an appointment to discuss the opportunities you are offering VASA.

Have a wonderful week,

Ms. Fuerte

Spotlight Grade: 1st Grade – We Love Our Country!

VASA First Graders are meeting California Social Studies Standards through the study of our country’s symbols, heroes, and national holidays.  Currently, we are learning about Martin Luther King.  Upcoming studies will center on George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington Carver.  Students are learning about the importance of our flag, the Pledge of Allegiance and our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, as well as symbols.  They are also learning about the history surrounding these symbols and other important American icons.

We are beginning our geography studies and mapping through our studies of Martin Luther King Jr. and our penguin unit.  We are to name and locate the seven continents and the four major oceans.

Throughout our lesson of George Washington Carver we will be planting peanuts and learning about plant growth.  We will be finding out first hand that all plants need light and water to grow.

As you can see, first graders are learning a great deal at VASA!

Reading tip of the week…

“Look at what I did!” Keeping a chart or graph that illustrates the number of books a child has read can bring a sense of accomplishment.
